Should I Take The Tomatoes ?

There is a house for sale across the alley from me that has 4 or 5 tomato
plants just inside their back yard near the back fence. The house has been empty for about a year now. I have been watching these plants grow and
sorta noticing all the fruit growing like crazy on the vines. (they are not
staked or anything) This morning I noticed a bunch were ready for picking.
They look wonderful & I'm very tempted to step inside & take a few. Would
you do it?

I would, otherwise they'll just get eaten by crows or other animals. At least you can put 'em to good use.

It doesn't seem like anyone else is interested in them. , What a shame to let them just rot away, huh!!!

I don't know who I would ask, before helping myself to good food either.

Just wonder how they've grown so well - as far as I know, they need watering quite often. Has it been raining a lot?

Yep ~ Take those tomatoes and enjoy them. Might also consider watering the plant if it hasn't rained recently. Who knows? The house could still be empty next year and you'll get another crop of tomatoes.

LOL I felt so funny asking this question, but I would be mortified if
someone came along and caught me picking them. :o Well, I did muster
up the courage to take a few this afternoon.They look delicious.I kept
thinking that they would just go to waste. :) I was wondering later how
they would do so well with no one around to tend them.

With my luck, right when I was snitching them, the realtor would come to show the house!

Those are what Dad called Volunteer tomatoes. They just come up on their own. Maybe there was a garden there at one time or someone chucked a tomato there and the plants came up on their own. :)

I hardly doubt that caring for the garden by picking the ripe ones so the not so ripe ones CAN ripen qualifies for a WANTED poster in the Post Office. Go for it, girl!!! Enjoy every last, tantalizing bite!! ;);) I LOVE native tomatoes.

Guess what my favorite sandwich is??? Native tomato and vadalia onion sandwich with lettuce, mayo, salt and pepper. :p Good thing I sleep alone!

I did know the guy who lived there before, but don't know how to contact
him. I think he moved back to Kentucky.I know he wouldn't mind.But having
to explain all that to someone else with an armload of tomatoes might be
just too hard to do. :D

I don't know the exact porportions - I kind of make it up as I go

some freshly grown tomatoes :rolleyes:
onion
a couple of peppers - serrano or jalepeno seem to work well.
cilantro
lime

Chop it all up - get some chips and enjoy. - watch out for the peppers though, I didn't know that the inside with the seeds was where all the heat was stored - that was one hot batch of salsa. :eek: :eek:

Yes, take the tomatoes!!

It does remind me a story my friend at work was telling me today. Over the weekend, a van pulls up in front of her parent's house. This guy gets out, and proceeds to take about 3 armloads of apples from their tree and the ground around. He then goesto the door, and asks if he can have some apples!!! Her dad told him thought the 3 armloads was probally enough!

They're not too swift at "bringing them to the kitchen" ...

I bought two beautiful tomatos and left them at my mom's house.

I was going to go over and cook her dinner and use the 'maters in a salad.


She ate BOTH of them and proclaimed that they were 'really good'.

The moral of all the Tomato Postings lately?

I got a hankering for homegrown tomatoes the other night and was looking SOO lovingly at my neighbors garden. Only one problem. He's got a standard poodle that barks at the tiniest movement in the yard. Plus they have a motion sensor that turns on the flood lights.

Reuters-August 25

A woman faces felony charges in what officials are described as a string of serial thefts.

The woman, who identified herself as, "Lizbud" was arrested as she ran out of a bakery with a loaf of 7 grain whole wheat bread. Police first were alerted to the thefts after neighbor dog chased her away from a tomato vine at a vacant house.

A witness description at a later theft gave law enforcement officials all they needed to capture the alleged criminal.

That theft was tn a rural farm on the outskirts of town. The owner of the stolen sow saw a shadow with one if his pigs in tow.

"Why, she just jumped the fence with my pig!" Farmer John told reporters.


The culprit was later spotted at a local supermaarket in the condiment aisle.
The manager noticed that the suspect was looking at mayonaisse jar while she slipped a head of lettuce into her purse. SHe was chased from the store by security.

The BLT BANDIT, as she is known to police was relleased after questioning.

Her only comment to news organization covering the story was, "It all started with those tomatoes...".

Oh you guys are soooo funny. :D Well, as I pondered & fretted about
if I should feel guilty taking the tomatoes, apparently my secret garden
is not secret anymore. The word is out. :( Someone else has discovered
the "free" tomatoes.I only found two on my last visit. :D Plenty of green
ones left & it will be a race between me & the other thief when they start
to ripen. :D The inconsiderate thief even left the gate open. The nerve of
some people. LOL. ;)
