Can I just ask why none of your dogs are fixed:confused:

And is Travis purebred.

Welcome to PT

All three of my dogs are fixed. Travis and Miles just recently got neutered about three weeks ago. Katy has been spayed for atleast 4 or 5 years now. ;)

Yes, Travis is purebred. I got him from a breeder. ;)

Thank you :)

Thank you everyone. :)

Travis is purebred. I got him from a breeder and saw both of his parents. His father was the "Rin Tin Tin" type GSD :p (BEAUTIFUL Black and Tan Plush Coat) and his mother was a Bi Color with a very short coat.

We are having issues with Travis' weight right now. I can't figure out why he is so skinny. He eats all of the time. I give him three meals a day. He's a VERY active dog (look at what breed he is, it's a given) We're working on fattening him up. I go to a German Shepherd forum on a regular basis and they have given me great advice. So, his weight probably should be sorted out. ;)

LoL, I'm just too slow with replying! :D

I think this will be the perfect site for me. I plan on being a photographer so I take A LOT of pictures daily. :D

Miles is quite the little ham. He loves to dance. I was very lucky to catch it so clearly though. :)

If you're having trouble with weight, perhaps he has worms? I'm sure your other board probably already addressed that, but in case they didn't, that could explain any problems with weight that Travis is having. :o A dose of Drontal is really all it will take to clear that right up.

Beautiful dog though!

Thats what I thought as well. They did suggest having his stools checked. As far as I can tell, they are just like they always have been.

For a while I wasn't too worried about his weight because German Shepherd don't fully fill out until about 2-3 years of age, but once his ribs started showing so much I decided its time to worry.

I'll probably end up talking to my vet about his weight soon. Right now we are increasing his kibble amount by a little bit. (Not too much though ;) )

Welcome. Beautiful dogs. Miles certainly is a ham. I can relate to what its like owning an attention ham myself. That coat must cover up a lot of Travis' thinness, if I knew he cleared all health problems I'd just say he was an active racy dog, but you'd better get him checked first. We've got one or two other members on pt trying to fill out their skinny dogs too.

Welcome to PT!! You can never post too many pictures here...we all looooove pictures!

I absolutely love Travis's face, he has the most gorgeous expressions! Katy is gorgeous, I have a Lab/Beagle mix and she reminds me *a bit* of him (in a lot smaller version of course)...They really don't look alike but for some reason she reminded me of him  LOL Maybe its the eyes or that big ole smile...And Miles, he is the CUTEST little thing! I loved the picture with his feet in the air, too cute!

Again, welcome. My name is Ashley and I am owned by the Fantabulous 5 in my siggy (aka The Hoodlums).

Those are great pics! I love those action shots of Travis. GSD are one of my favorite breeds. Thanks so much for sharing. If you still keep having problems with his weight you can maybe give us some more details in the future and maybe somebody here can help with some feeding advice, etc.

The little ones are adorable too, but I'm more of a big dog fan so I always gravitate towards them first, although there are many adorable small dogs here, attached to some very nice people!

Yippeee!!!!! Another GSD!!
WELCOME!!! My name is Angie and I am the Pet Talk's local GSD nut! :p
I have Sierra (Sable) and Buddy (blk n tan) Both were resuces.
Both of mine had problems putting weight on too.
It took Sierra until she turned 4 to start looking "normal" She could never get above the mid 60's. :o I always had people asking me "Is she sick?" But now she's at 72 and looks great!! She just turned 5 last month.
I had blood work run for Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency or EPI . You should read up on it, and see if it's something you should talk to you vet about. It's very common in GSD's.
My Buddy was only 76 pounds when I adopted him at 1 year old. I finally had him up to a healthy 90 pounds, but just over a month ago he went through a bad spell with worms and wound up in the hospital on an IV and lost 12 pounds. :( So that knocked him down to 78. Like fighting an uphill battle!
He'll be 4 in December.
What kind of food do you feed him?
How much per day does he get?

Nice to meet someone as in love with the breed as myself!
Your dogs are gorgeous! I'd love a sable for my next GSD. ;)
Travis is my second GSD, the first one was also a Black and Tan.

Travis weighs 76lbs (I was surprised he weighed that much)

Right now he is getting Purina, but I am looking into changing his food to a better kind. (Again, the wonderful people at the GSD forum are helping me with that :D )

I use a drinking glass as his food scooper (its fairly large). I'd say its about a cup and half every meal? I've recently increased his kibble amount as well.

Vela
08-18-2006, 11:38 AM
To me it sounds like he's not getting enough to eat, 3 cups of purina a day is not enough for a dog his size, I don't beleive. Since you are changing to be a better quality food then 3 cups a day imight be enough, but many dogs eat 4+ cups of purina types foods a day just to try to maintain weight, as it's mostly full of fillers. What food did they recommend to you on the GSD board?

I agree with Vela, I don't think that's enough food for him.
As with most GSD's. Sierra has a VERY sensitive stomach, after trying lots of different foods I found the Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach was the best. It appears that she is most sensitive to poultry. (She'll throw up or have the runs immediately)
They have been on it for a few years and they do very well on it.
I know it's not the best food out there, but it's the best thing for them!
They eat their big meal at night, they both get 2 1/2 cups dry and a heaping tablespoon of canned. Then in the morning I put another 1- 1 1/2 cups of dry down for them and they pick at it during the day when I'm at work.

Make sure to ask your vet about EPI, it's just a simple blood test to find out if he has it.
What other GSD board do you belong to?
I also belong to www.thegsd.com

Welcome! You're furkids are all gorgeous! Travis is sooo handsome! I'm having a lot of trouble keeping weight on my little dachshund Molly, she's not very "ribby" or anything but just not quite filled out enough. She's been through a lot in the past six months though so I think she'll be fine. Anywho, I can't wait to see more pictures!
