Abandoned copper mine pics...

[Glacier]

Sunday morning we hiked into an abandoned copper mine. It was active in the early 1900 and closed around 1920. Whitehorse is surrounded by huge copper deposits. (Dog related pics from the hike are on Dog General board)

Some of the mine shafts are still open, but very dangerous, too dangerous to even consider going in them. We did pull some cool rocks out of the tailing piles.

The color in the rock face is from the copper and other minerals in the stone. It's breathtaking. The picture doesn't do it justice.

Those are some really great pics! Whereabouts is this copper mine at - if its in Ontario, it might be worth a trip sometime! :D

I spent my sunday at a site where they used to mine Quartz and Feldspar (out near Bancroft, Ontario) since I wasn't allowed into the sodalite mine with open toed shoes :( But managed to get a ton of quartz bits for the rock tumbler for making more jewellery!
