Hi - I just adopted a 5 month old puppy. I was told at the shelter he is a Lab/Chow mix. But I have a 5 year old Lab/Chow mix & he has the purple tongue. This new puppy does not. He has a very pink tongue. His body has flat wavy hair - but his head has what we call an afro and it has a curl to it. He also has a little white on his chest & toes. I am thinking Lab/Newfoundland mix. He has big feet & at 5 months weighs in at 40 pounds.

Any ideas???

Thank you,
Colleen

HI! first off, WELCOME TO PT!!! i hope you like it here! it's quite addictive! :D

secondly, this thread should be in the Dog General or Dog Breeds sections. your puppy sure is cute! i think he looks like either a newfie/border collie or newfie/lab.

Welcome to Pet Talk! Your pup is adorable. He reminds me some of a flat-coated retriever, but really it's so hard to tell when they are young. When I got my girl Tasha, I was told at the humane society her mother was a German shepherd/greyhound mix, but I was somewhat doubtful and she looked kinda lab/GSD at the time.

Here she was at eight weeks:

12ish weeks:

7 months!

And present day (7 years old)

So I'd say it'll be kinda tough to really guess for sure until he matures. But My golden retriever Tommy was 65 pounds at 6 months old, so I think he'd weigh more at 5 months if he had newf in him, although if he was newf and a more medium breed he may not be.. you just never know!

Your baby is beautiful. I live in the mountains in So Cal. Up here we call dogs that are mostly black in color, with thickish hair :Big Black Mountain Dogs. Just a general term, usually of some sort of lab mix.

Sounds like he's mixed with newfoundland. Maybe you could post some pictures of him so other people could tell by looking at him. It would probably easier that way. Good luck! :D
