Paul and I were driving through Newton, and there, on the Commonwealth Avenue median strip, was this odd, large bird! We don't know what he is, and were wondering if anyone knew ... I thought Cormorant, but none of the ones in the book looked like that, especially the curvature of his beak and that pouchy thing under his beak. He was well over a foot tall, with that long neck making up much of his height ...

Anyone have any ideas?

Me either. Might be a mix... Can birds mix-breed? It might be some sort of turkey ( that's what it looks like to me... :o )

Doesn't look anything like our wild turkeys ... we do have those around here, too ... Now one is attached.

I, being a birdwatcher, have seen these many times and I still can't find out what it is. Common loon, maybe? Definatley some type of water bird by the look of the pouch on its beak. Probably used to hold fish. I'll have to look.

Thanks everyone! Looks like a Double Crested Cormorant it is - we looked at Cormorant pictures in the book, but none of them looked right, but the ones you found look like him!

It was just one bird, two pictures. He then flew off, perhaps toward the Charles River.
