i just read in the newspaper that the Black Rhino has become extinct :( that really makes me feel sad. i´m not sure if its new news or old news but i just read it, i do hope they are still a few out there........

i´m also mad because whether or not they were "protected" by law they still hunted them to extinction, RIP Black Rhinos.......you will be missed.......

I wonder if there are any zoo's or preservations that could breed them and reintroduce them into the wild.

Such a shame.. :(

We were just at the Cincinnati Zoo last week and it was sad to see all the animals on the endangered list but heartwarming to see new babies.

I think a newspaper needs to bone up on their research? A subspecies has been tentatively listed as extinct, but black rhinos still exist.

I still like Kenya's (no longer in force) anti poaching method. They killed the poachers and displayed the poachers on the front page of the next day newspaper.

That website might be a poor example.. its (C) 2001 & the info in it, is back in the early 1990's (well over 10yrs ago).

Now I didn't go through the whole site, just that 1 page. So if there is more info elsewhere on that site, would be a good idea to post that too :)

the page has more up to date info than the 1990's. The copyright is referring to the design of the page, not the info posted.

Yes, they have information from 2006 on the site.

I searched around a bit and it appears that just one of the four subspecies of black rhino is being tentatively declared extinct. The West African subspecies. It is still sad of course but all black rhino are not gone, at least yet.

i actually had a second look at the newspaper and it specifically mentioned Cameroon so i looked up and found this: (the black rhino has 4 subspecies:the southern, the southwestern, the eastern, and the western. All four subspecies are listed as critically endangered on IUCN's Red List. )

Western black rhino
The western black rhino once ranged throughout the savanna zones of West Africa, but today only a few scattered animals remain in Cameroon. This rarest and most endangered subspecies of black rhino hovered at around eight individuals in 2001 (IUCN).

i found this at WWF worldwildlife.org
