My rescue group has a website (www.1by1catrescue.com). Among the pages are memorials for pets we have lost (many are cats formerly from our shelter). As one of their volunteers, I thought that even though Lucas was not a 1by1 cat, I could write something for him. Here it is:
Lucas, you were my first real rescue. You were a youngster
on the street and I snatched you from the forthcoming icy
jaws of winter. You grew up to be a friend to everyone you
met both human and feline. Over the years you were my alarm
clock and my purr therapist. You were a joy to have around.
11 1/2 years was simply not enough time to spend with you.
But cancer made your body weak and I would not have you
suffer. You carried a very large piece of my heart with you
to the rainbow bridge and I expect you to return it to me
upon our reunion.........one fine day. Jen Luckenbach
