As many here seems to own the Canon PowerShot S2 (and as it seems, several others are planning to get it :)), I thought we could start a discussion thread here were we can share photos and help each other to get to know the camera better. We could share our experiences and maybe learn from each other.

What do you think about it?

I got my camera two weeks ago, and I'm still practicing. Here are some examples of what I've tried so far (some of them were already posted in other photo threads).

Indoors, close up of Lily:

Landscape

Zoom, landscape

Zoom, small objects

Here, the camera definitely reaches its limits! Even though the 12x optical zoom works great, I didn't manage to get a clear picture of this stork family. It's appr. 200 meter away and tried to take it from a little window in the roof of the bathroom in my office. I never managed to get a clearer picture.

http://www.catmom.de/pix/storch_neu.jpg

(On shorter distances, the zoom works fine! The other day, I took a nice close-up of my neighbors daughter from my window on the second floor. :))

Select one color

This is fun! In the Color Mode, you can select one color which you want to appear in the picture, and the rest of the photo will be black and white! :)

I would love to see YOUR photos made with the S2, and read about experiences! :)

Another one: :) You should definitely try this! (12x optical zoom + 4x digital zoom):

Oh Kirsten, I'm so glad that you posted these! I'm searching right now for my replacement camera (in case mine doesn't show up in a pawn shop within a few weeks) and I was liking the reviews and features on this camera! That and the S3... of course bottom line price will be the determining factor in which one I ultimately choose. Looks like the S2 is a winner! Can you post more pics?

Wow, I especially like the shot of the bees (or flies), that's incredible! My boyfriend is looking to buy me a camera, and, he's looking at a Canon. I would love to be able to take macro photos that good!

Wow Kristen, you read my mind. :p All of your photo's are absolutly stunning. Here are some of my pictures, I am definently still learning, since I have only had this camera for two full days.

As you can see, I've mostly been playing around with the super macro and the Color Mode.

Kristen (and any other S2 owners) what size do you take your pictures in? And do you use, Fine, Super fine *I think that's what its called*, or normal? Also, what battery brand are you using?

I like this thread! I am an intruder though :o I bought the S80 and not the S2! May I still join you? Both cameras have similar functions, so I should be able to follow the discussions.

I have chosen the S80 because I wanted a good digital camera to replace my 4 year-old Nikon, that I could bring everywhere, and I like very much the format of the S80. In the same time I also wanted to have manual functions that allow a lot of creativity. I am very happy with this choice. The only regret I have when I see the moon picture of Kirsten, is that I do not have the zoom tele of the S2!

I have also started playing with the Macro mode and the color functions, the result is sometimes so funny! I just have to find time to post the pics, it is a problem for me because I am on PT at work, most of the time. But I'll try to do my best to share my first pics with you :)

@Toby's my baby: Wow!! Your photos are awesome, you have learnt quickly to use that cam! :)

I especially love this one, it's great:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/Tobysmybaby/FirstpicswithS2015.jpg

Well, the manual recommends "Fine" for photos, and "Superfine" for videos. I've tried both, and I don't think it does any harm if you take photos with the "superfine setting".

I'm using rechargeble Ni-MH batteries, the brand is called Bilora.

Another thing: as the camera came only with a 16 MB memory card, I had to buy another one. Got a 1 GByte card from amazon for only 20 Euro, that should be enough. But don't use those by Hama, they're not good.

@Kim: I'm sorry that you have to look for a new camera under these circumstances. :( Heard that the S2 and the S3 are very similar. Of course the S3 should have some more features, but it's 150 - 200 € more!

I posted a link for finn's mom that should also be interesting for you. You'll find a list of all digicams, and when you click them, you'll see photos made with them. The page is in German, but that should be no problem:

Canon cameras (http://www.digicamfotos.de/index3.htm?http://www.digicamfotos.de/4images/categories.php?cat_id=26)

All Digicams (http://www.digicamfotos.de/index3.htm?http://www.digicamfotos.de/4images/categories.php?cat_id=11)

Hope this helps! :)

@Sonia: Of course you can join! :) It will be interesting to see your pictures!

Thanks Kristen! I'll have to find some new batteries, as I always need more than one set of batteries. :p I bought a new mem. card yesterday, 1G, for $50, and a new camera case.

Kari, both links that Kristen provided are great, you can also check out: www.dpreview.com

I read somewhere, that the S2 and S3 were so similar, that your best bet was to get the S2 because of its price, unless money isn't an issue :p

I have also ordered a camera case, it should arrive the next days.

As Kim has asked to post more photos, I'll post two more:

A formation of clouds today:

And another one of the moon, this time without the digizoom (only 12x optical zoom), and in the landscape mode. Seems to be a little more clearer in landscape mode:

And here's one I took last weekend in the dawn, without using flash.

I see Canon is getting more and more fans here! ;)

I just took a picture that was really difficult to make. It's far from being perfect, I know, and unfortunately, the lightning isn't more centered. I used ISO400, that's why it's sort of "dirty", and I have no tripod. I tried to vary the aperture and the exposure time, but it wasn't working, so I used the P-mode, which worked much better (looks I really have to learn a lot about photography):

Sarah, some of the settings don't have it - I usually use it on the P setting. Just hold the macro button down for a few seconds.
The macro works so well that if my lens is dirty it focuses on the dirt.

Oh, so you have to hold it down? I've gotta try that. Y'all are getting some awesome shots with the super macro!

you guys are getting fabulous shots!
I haven't really played much with it in the last couple days. I haven't figgered out how to change the colors yet. Or make them black and white - my sister had my camera in less then 5 minutes was taking sepia and b/w pics but neglected to show ME how! She doesn't even have this kind - :(
You landscape pics and flower pics - Kirsten and TMB are much better then mine - maybe it's b/c landscapes and flowers are just prettier where you guys live!? :p ;)
I'm off this weekend - maybe I'll get a chance to play with it then.
I do have a moon pic but it isn't near that good - are you closer to the moon then me!? :p

Sonia59
07-06-2006, 02:49 AM
Great pics Kirsten, I love them all! :) Sky, moon, etc.
I hope I have some time the coming weekend to resize and post some pics.

For the memory card, I also bought a 1 Gb. The most important is the speed. Buy a fast one! Writing speed is the limiting factor to take pictures fast. I took the Extreme III from SanDisk.

I like playing with the color functions. Did you do this with the automatic color mode? For me, picking only one color is possible only with the color mode, not with the manual programmes P, M, etc. which means that I am limited to do some macro then.

Kirsten
07-06-2006, 01:31 PM
Sonia, it's only possible in the color mode. It also has a function to replace colors, but this hasn't worked for me so far.

I took this photo this morning, a flock of pigeons. It didn't turn out well. Does anyone have a suggestion how to photograph moving objects?

When photographing moving objects, turn the ISO up. :)

I always used Tv mode for outside moving objects, and Av mode for inside moving objects. And always on an ISO of 400.

Does this camera have a rechargable battery or do you have to buy batteries? That would be a HUGE drawback and really the only thing from stoping me buying one if it doesn't come with a rechargeable battery.

shais_mom
07-07-2006, 12:54 AM
It doesn't come with a rechargeable battery but it takes 4- AA batteries - so I use the rechargeable ones.
I bought this camera on June 12th and finally had to replace the batteries yesterday! The regular alkaline batteries that it came with - lasted that long! With my Fuji's I might get a couple days of pics from the batteries.
I probably took about 300 pics and several videos and uploaded them all..

still loving it

I don't understand why a camera would be made without a rechargable battery!? I went digital to not have to deal with the cost of film and stuff. We'll see, I don't know. I'm about to buy a nano and I don't have a job right now so I can't get it right away anyhow. (stupid petsmart said they would call me but never did)

I bought a rechargeable batteries - AA and one hour charger for about $20 - you can get a 15 minute charger for about $28
To me that has the rechargeable battery option
My sister's Canon takes the special little square battery and it was about $60 to get another one so she could have one charged and ready for when she needed it.
That is what I bought a camera that had the feature of using AA batteries.

what is a nano?

Staci a Nano is an Ipod... i'll stick to CDs i think ;). Everyone is getting realy great results from this camera, well done.

I am still not sure about it there are a couple of things that are bothering me 1) Is realy sharp action shots, the BCs can realy hoon around at times. 2) Is the AA batteries, i thought i would not go back to AAs after having the litium battery in my Panasonic.

I am going to check out the S3 when it is realeased here and make up my mind then. *Sigh* If they could combine my Panasonic and the S2/3 i would be happy... i am still after an SLR when i can afford it though.

Thanks Rhi! :) I have decided to stick to CD's too - I don't listen to music enough other then in the car.
Funny I never thought I would want a camera that didn't use AA batteries - I also bought the Li batteries that that are AA for my California trip. I'll probably still take my charger too tho unless I pick up another set of the Lithium but I doubt if I would need them for as many pics as I took for over 3 weeks on regular alkaline batteries.

The only differences in the S2 and S3 are the LCD, the new sports mode, the widescreen feature, and I'm pretty sure it was something else.. I don't really care which one I get, since it's a pretty minor upgrade to the S3.

might be a minor upgrade but it isn't a minor upgrade in price!

I see - while I am not trying to discourage you - a $500 camera is a lot of $10 an hours! :( You might try looking at some of the other Canon's or Olympus - they might be just as good and a bit cheaper - I almost got this one
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Olympus-SP-500-Ultra-Zoom-Digital-Camera/sem/rpsm/oid/134463/catOid/-13062/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
I had my eye on it for awhile - but decided I wanted to be able to hold the camera and play with it so I didn't want to buy it online. And it got very good reviews also.
If you have any other questions you can PM me or I'm sure either one of the girls with this camera since we are kind of hijacking this thread:)

Yeah, so I'll probably go with the S2, hoping it's on Sale during the week of my birthday. My mom said it may be a little after my birthday before I get the camera, but that's okay with me. Nice Olympus, but it uses xD cards. -___- I kind of want to play with the S2 before I buy it, too. If I have any questions, I will certainly be dropping you a PM. :)

Link to a review coparing the S2 and S3. Canon Review (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons3is/)

I am seriously thnking of the S3, though for the $90 difference, the S2 is perfectly fine!

My mom is seriously helping out to get a replacement camera. She's giving me cash as an early birthday and anniversary gift. As soon as I can afford half the camera she'll give me half the money as both gifts. Hubby is quite happy to have our anniversary gift go towards my camera (just to make ME happy... isnt he SWEET? I knew he was a good guy!)

Shais mom... lol, I agree with you! my kids know not to ask for something that expensive... even as a Christmas gift. Ashley got the $250 Canon Powershot A520 (or something like that) as her ONLY Christmas gift this year. She gets some awesome photos from that, and its now down below $200 in many places around here.

I've been looking at this thread and now I really want this camera. I showed it to my mom and she told me to start saving my money. My birthday is in November and then Christmas shortly after, so I'll hopefully get it then. My camera is pretty good, but stinks when it comes to macro pictures, plus it eats batteries like potatoe chips!

I've been considering buying the S2. I have my canon rebel but also a Canon A95. I have the A95 if I want to take pictures somewhere and not risk having my Rebel stolen. The A95 was $500 when I bought it. I was thinking of selling it as using that money towards a new camera (S2) I don't know how much I could sell it for. I think I saw the S2 in stores for $400 or so...so even if I could get $100-200 for the A95 (no idea what it's worht right now) I HAVE the money for it, I just feel like I'm spending too much on something I don't need. I HAVE a great camera already...

Would you say it's worth it? Is the S3 a whole lot better?

ugh, what I really want is an SLR. I'll have it in about 5 years. I need a job now, and after insurance and gas and repairs to my old jeep I'll have about $100 a month to save because I can only work like 15 hours max a week durring school or I'd die, and I NEED that for shareboarding. :( I guess I'll have to stick with my kodak.

I love the S2 over the 3 Fuji's I have had in my camera experience. I don't really know anyone who has the S3 - but on circuit city the S2 got a higher rating then the S3. :)

Ok, so this next week we have our county fair, and I'm going to enter some pictures, but I need help decideing. These are the ones me and my family have picked out. I'm not sure how many you can enter. Its just a little fair, so its not like the pictures have to be anything fantastic, but if you dont like any of the pictures I'm posting, for any reason please say so, because I need to narrow it down.... I'm pretty sure I like the first four, not so crazy about #3... *sorry about the crazy sizes*

Full Moon
The moon, again, the full moon of last night. I used a flash this time. I think more than this is not possible with this cam, at least I tried various settings and this was the best result:

http://www.catmom.de/pix/mond3.jpg

Orange Lily 2
I tried it again, without using flash. This time, the background turned out totally black, but I think it's not too bad.

http://www.catmom.de/pix/lilie2.jpg

LOL; edited because I just noticed: Maybe I should unite these two pictures somehow (unfortunately, I don't know anything about digiart) as a symbol for my girls. "Luna" and "Lily", you know... ;)

Say "Cheeeese"!
I'm a bit upset with this one. It looked just perfect on the camera's display, but once downloaded to my computer, I found the contrast is too high, and it's also not really sharp.

How did you get the backgroud to turn out completly black on the Lily photo?

Well, I don't know... I used the tv mode (F7,1, exposure time 1/320, no flash, spot focus). The sun was shining onto the blossom. I was surprised it turned out completely black.

Kirsten, yesterday night I tried again the moon shots. It does not turn like yours at all, like this one for example:

http://www.catmom.de/pix/mond3.jpg

I know that my teleobjective is more limited than yours on my camera (x14 at maximum, comprising the use of digital zoom), but still, I should be able to catch the details of the moon, even if the moon would be smaller than yours in the centre of the picture. Can you indicate me the parameters of your picture?
And also, did you crop the picture you posted or is really this size on the original picture?

Kirsten
07-12-2006, 04:09 AM
Sonia, I noticed that moon shots turn out best in the landscape mode of the camera. Strange, isn't it? LOL

The picture above was taken with an aperture of F3,5 and an exposure time of 1/60 seconds. I also had the flash on. Noticed that the moon is looking clearer with a flash. As I have no tripod, I put the camera on a "corn cushion". I used the zoom to the max (12x opt. + 4x digital), and in the original, the moon is as least twice as big. With my software (Corel Photopaint) I removed some brightness and added some contrast to get clearer colors, and I sharpened the picture - that's all. :)

Kirsten

Sonia59
07-12-2006, 06:44 AM
Thanks, I'll try again! I don't think I can get F3.5 with the full zoom on my camera, but I'll try something approaching. I think my problem is that I have too much light, because the moon looks uniform. I will try reducing the exposure time. And the flash, I did not think about it! What ISO speed do you use? I used 400, may be it was not good. But with the automatic landscape mode, I have no choice anyway, it will be ISO 50. Does it matter in this case?

He-he, I usually never retouch my pics (may be a lack of time also), when they are not good I throw them away and I try again. Except if it is a precious picture of my cats that I cannot take again ;) What I am interested in, is what the camera can do (and me via the camera) more than the computer possibilities. This is also why I am so bad in Digiart :D

Kirsten
07-12-2006, 08:32 AM
Sonia, try to reduce ISO. I took mine with ISO 50.
And does your camera have a spot focus? It also helps to reduce the light of the moon.

I agree. The ones of Luna and Lily taken without flash are so much better and more natural. Unfortunately, you usually don't have enough light indoors for working without the flash, or - if the sun shines into the room - there's too much contrast due to shadow and light. For this, it's so much easier doing the portrait shots outdoors, but my girls are indoor cats!

I don't know if Canon cameras have this setting, but my Olympus camera has a setting called "available light". It's purrfect for taking indoor portraits of the cats without the flash. Next to the action setting it's the pre-set mode I use most often.

That's true, same here! I often think that a picture's looking good on the display, but once it's uploaded to the computer, it turns out to be poor. And sometimes it's just the other way around! LOL

Wow! Look at all the beautiful pictures! I am getting the S2 or S3 sometime this year. My hubby is buying it for me, so I can choose either model. We can save $100.00 if we go for the S2, but he already promised me the S3 (maybe that's because they didn't have the S2 in any store we went to).

His only rule...

"I won't buy it unless you show me how to use it!" LOL! He can use the camera I have now, but when he saw how many buttons were on the S3 his jaw dropped. He likes to take pictures of Bailey eating/acting goofy, and with the S2/S3 - he can take great videos too.

I can't wait! I want it right now but we have to make sure we can "afford" it on one paycheck (he's horrible at saving money).

I can't wait to see pictures with your new camera Tasha, I hope you get it soon!! :D

I took some more pictures yesterday. :o It seems like I'll start taking pictures, and then go on for days, and then stop, and not take any for like a week and a half, and then go crazy again. :o lol, at least I have a thread to share them on!

I have a "job" for this Saturday, I have to be the "photographer" at my brothers wedding reception that is at our house. I asked my mom if I had to work/ help on Saturday, and she said no, but then she said I am going to be the "photographer" :p I'm really excited, but I don't want the people to stop what they are doing, and smile at the camera, I want everyone to just keep on with what they are doing, so I can capture the atmosphere. Hopefully the people will cooperate!

THE ST LOUIS CARDINALS!! Pujols is my favorite player! I have his jersey! Hehe who won btw?? ;)

Anyway to answer your question, lower your ISO. The higher your ISO is, the granier the pictures will be. The lower the ISO, the less light will be let in but the crisper and less grainy the photos will be. So a lower ISO is better especially for action shots.

And I do absolutely no touching up on my photos in a photo editing program. If I do, then it is only to mess with the lighting or contrast.

*squeal* My son saved up money all summer to buy a video camera so that his dad could tape him running at cross country and track meets. I told him that would be the biggest waste of money because this camera takes videos and has a good long zoom. IF this is true, he will be giving me $300 towards it... combine that with my mom's $300 and I'll have enough money to buy the camera, the world's largest card, good rechargable batteries, and an extended warranty.

Sooooo... please, please, please tell me this camera can take looong videos that can be as long as you need, based on card size and battery life.

shais_mom
08-13-2006, 01:48 PM
I have a one gig card and just put the Energizer Li batteries in and I think it takes about an 8 minute video - of course you can get 2 gig, 3 gig and 4 gig cards which would be longer.
Least that is the way I interrupted it.

Ok, I got my money and will be buying the camera tomorrow. I had my heart set on the S3 but it looks like its going to be the S2. I can't justufy spending the extra $150 for a camera thats not that much different. Maybe after I win the lottery! :D

Seriously folks, do you think there's enough difference to justify the extra $150? According ot Circuit City's customer rating, the S2 has a much higher satisfaction rating. I'm soooo 4f53(oops, Flutter's input) confused!

and because of the issue of being able to take long videos, my son is going to buy his own cam corder as he had planned all summer. Luckily the S2 is on sale for $315.... which is only $15 more than what my mom gave me today. My son already said he'd give me the money to buy the rechargable batteries and a card (gosh I feel pathetic, having my son chip in for my camera :o, but hey, I DID get him his job this summer at Petsmart;))

Also, which rechargable batteries work best in this camera? What does everyone use? Is one brand better than another?

I'm so excited I could explode!

While I've never gotten to use the S2, I do own the S1 and have had use of the S3 for a month last summer. I like both but the S3 definately is better with more features. All of my cameras have been a Canon! I also own the A40 digital, Rebel II SLR, and Rebel XS SLR too.

Here's a few pix I took last summer with the S3....(sorry for my inconsistent resizing)

HUH? I don't quite get the question on the 'in move' part sorry.

why my S2IS don't have zoom on supermacro?
How can I take a photos with zoom on supermacro?

I'm not positive with the S2, however I own both the S1 and the S3 and only my S3 has super macro. It will allow focusing right on the lens if you want but isn't a zoom macro. I have to assume the S2 doesn't have that feature either. I'm not sure if any point and shoot type camera has that and I've priced lenses for a DSLR for zoom macro and they are expensive. If you want to zoom you'd be further ahead to just use the regular macro setting and zoom in with that rather than use super macro mode.

*as a side note I just bought the Canon XTi yesterday. YAY! So now I currently own 5 Canon cameras! lol

i love my piggy
10-14-2007, 02:43 AM
WOW...AMAZING pictures people!!! :D I almost bought the S3 but instead I decieded to get a compact camera. If I am not mistaken Canon came out with the S5 I tried it out in the store and loved it...but $$$ it is a ton of money  I had the canon A520, but after having it about a year I sold it to my brother and got a compact Panasonic which I love! My mom also got a mega zoom camera from Panasonic. (don't get me wrong...I still love cananon!)

my s2 has super macro and macro
I think that you can't do moving shots in macro or super macro b/c the camera is trying to get the details of the image you want.
Back in June I was trying to take pics at a race and when the sun was out I was getting good pics but when the sun went down I couldn't get good ones b/c using the flash-the rapid succession- and zoom was too much for the camera to handle. I could either do rapid succession or flash and zoom - one or the other.
**
not sure if I understood the question either so I'm not sure I answered it.

Hi,

so - what with photos in move?

And why my S2IS don't have zoom on supermacro?
And in move?
I think it won't zoom in super macro b/c the lens is already out pretty far -and you can get really close to the object if you read the book it tells you to be careful using macro and super macro b/c you could get too close and bust the lens. So that's zoom won't work with the macros.
I don't know what the move question means.
