I was wondering how many people on PT regularly compete in agility with their dogs. If so you got any good action-shots?

I was so proud the other day when my girl and i won 4th place at a competition. ( out of app. 25 ) :D

And I'm currently agility classes with my dog Jack, in fact we start Advanced Agility classes this Thursday! I'm planning on entering our first show in about 6 weeks :D I am super excited.

My brother took these pics back when we were in Beginning agility class, they aren't very good, but better than nothing!

WHOA. You do competitive agility with your Grey? HUUUGE congrats!

Do you have any pictures of her? I give you so much kudos because even the fiercest competitors that I know of haven't been very successful with their greys. These guys just aren't made for those sharp turns. What was your time?

GreyhoundGirl

Sorry but for some strange reason  they ( judges ) didn't give us our scores or times, they just told us who won. I'm sure i was well under the time limit, though because she just went blasting through the course  . ( it was really quite funny, she didn't slow down for the weaves, she just expected them to jump out of her way, i was amazed when she actually did them correctly at that speed ;) ) I haven't seen any other Greyhounds in agility, but my girl has never had any trouble with turns.

Everyone's pictures are really cute! Your girl is a Greyhound mix, right? You said she was like 30", she looks more like 20" :p

I do not have any pictures from matches. =P Not even Rally-O! Gonzo has only done prenovice Agility, but here's a training picture that I have.

Jenny and I were at a competition today. We didn't win. :( Oh well. We have another K9 Kup tommaro, YAY !!! :D

"Your girl is a Greyhound mix, right? You said she was like 30", she looks more like 20" "

Yes, she is a greyhound mix. I just measured her. She is just over 28" inches.(shoulders ) You can even tell by the photo. She goes right from my knees to my chest. I can't wait untill tommaro ! YAY !!!!

The only thing is... I'm competing against the dreaded. . . BORDERLINES !!!!! All PUREBRED ( thier team doesn't accept mixs ) border collies, that are very smart and super well-trained for agility.

My team of mix-matched breeds ( 3 aussies, 1 shetland sheepdog,1 husky mix, 1 greyhound mix ( guess who ? ! ) 1 boxer, 1 lab, and 1 bichon frisé mix. Sorry if I missed anyone !) have never beaten them. :( They are too good. My team has good jumpers ( Babe, Cricket ) good weavers ( Cutter, Molly ) fast dogs ( Jenny, Dean ) and good contacting dogs ( Kolby, Buddy ). But there team has good everything ! We can't compete with them. :(

Maybe tommaro we'll beat them. We'll show them you don't have to be pure bred. Show them that we make a good team, and we're just as good as all there specially-trained dogs. ( positively yet competitively) WE"LL SHOW "EM !

( consults dog, who is lying at feet. ) You will beat them, won't you, Jenny?

Then she gives me the look that clearly says " Yea, right, not in a million years ! " ( I won't even try ")
 ;) :p

He He, like the way I wrote my post?

( it's just for fun, there are no titles or anything. But I thought it would be funny to write my post this way. Not the colour. It seems like I wrote it from a different point of view..... :o )

:D WOO HOO !!!

Jennifer and I won 2nd today !!!!( Borderlines got 1st  ) Yes! Oh yea, oh yea...( does happy-party dance )

It wasn't in standard, though... it was in snookers. We didn't get to finish, though... Because we got called off for doing the tire only once. Like that matters. I had to re-try the course because the first time the judge called me off for no reason. So he let me re-try. ( he's a nice person :) )

In standard I didn't actually do that well.... :( Jen took too long trying to get into a lie-down on the table. ( it was really hot !!! )( I also lost 5 points for touching the table to try and get her to lie down. )

I jumpers she did really well, too. Unfortunatly, so did the competition. So, she didn't place. :( Oh well.

I will post some pics of today later.

I also need some advice, though... Does anyone know a different way to train weaves? My girl isn't too good at them. ( she lost 20 points today for skipping the 12 weaves  :( ) She will do off-set, no problem. But she won't do straight weaves, the one's that they use in competition.

I've got to train the weaves before the next competition. Please help !!

We don't compete yet.. but I'm hoping we will very soon! We started taking agility classes not too long ago and he's already doing such a good job. All we really need to work on is the aframe.

Do you clicker train? I trained Kai to do weaves by clicking for just entering on the correct side. Then I started clicking for entering the correct side and taking a step towards the next pole, then clicking for entering the next pole, etc. His weaves are pretty solid now and it didn't take very long for him to get it.

GreyhoundGirl
07-16-2006, 06:33 PM
:o Jenny is a timid dog. :o She's scared of the noise the clicker makes. :o Plus, my trainer doesn't do clicker training, so we don't really get a chance.

binka_nugget
07-16-2006, 06:36 PM
You could still use the same method but say "Yes!" instead. :)

GreyhoundGirl
07-16-2006, 06:40 PM
I say good girl everytime she gets one right. Does that count? ( which doesn't happen often on straight weaves :o )

wolfsoul
07-16-2006, 06:45 PM
Saying yes would be better. :) For some reason, dogs react better to the word "yes" than any other random word for praise.

binka_nugget
07-16-2006, 06:47 PM
Well, the idea behind the "click" is that the sound is always the same. The click lets the dog know that it did something good at that very moment and will be rewarded for it. That's why I think it's better to use "yes!" if you choose not to click.

Clicker training is training step by step. So instead of having the dog weave all the way, then rewarding, you click (or say "yes!") when it enters the correct side. After the dog starts getting it, you only click when the dog takes a step out, then click when it goes further and further. The idea is that the dog will start offering things (another step) to you in exchange for the click.

It's a bit of a hassle to introduce the dog to the clicker/method but I've found that Kai's weaves were 100% more solid after I started clicker training. :)

I don't compete in agility with any of mine. I'd love to with Tango, but she needs to work on her doggy skills and focusing on me. If a dog were to bark or growl, all attention on me is lost and she's off to see which dog was barking...hopefully someday though. If not with her, definitley my next dog.

The way I taught Jack to weave was to make a channel with some pieces of chicken wire type stuff. I started with all of them on and slowly took one peice of the fencing away until he was doing it reliably. He is just about perfect with his weaves, since its one of the few pieces of equipment I own, and he is incredibly quick too.

Here are some incredibly bad pictures of the channel thing.

Here are my pics of yesterdays trial. It was sooo hot ! The dogs were jumping soooo low. The judge actually let us change the jump hieghts to our preference. I changed Jenny's from 26" ( what she usually jumps ) to 16". It was soooo hot !!!

here they are.

This is my favourite. You can really see the effort I put into keeping up with Jenny. This action-shot turned out great.

If anyone here's a fashion critiuque, go ahead. My mom went on, and on, and on about wearing green and blue. I got up at 5:00 and was tired, so I put on green pants. ( The blue shirt has my clubs logo on it. So I had to wear it.

My Sadie has never done agility, but our new dog park has agility equipment and I took pictures. Sadie is almost 14 and can't jump as high as she used to but she's still pretty good. When she was young she used her skill to hop fences, not win awards.

Greyhoundgirl, Jenny reminds me so much of Sadie. She looks like quite an athlete. Congratulations on your competitions so far and good luck in the future!!! Jenny's better than any pure bred border collie!

It's true, I have never seen to dogs that weren't purebred that look so much a like. I'd say they were twins, but sadie's 10 yrs younger than Jen. Was sadie that grey when she was younger? Jenny is grey like that, but only on her nose. Great pics !

Sadie was all black with just a white triangle on her chest for years. Now she is gray throughout her chest, paws and snout. It helps her look more defined in pictures!

GreyhoundGirl
08-06-2006, 08:29 PM
yea, I can see it now. Jen has more white on her chest. As you can see by the shots, the colouring on her nose makes her look old.

A guide to Jennifers colouring:

Birds eye view: All black.

bugs eye view: all white, with pink tummy.

I should take a bird and bug eye view pics and show y'all. They are funny. :)
