Both pictures were taken at approximately the same spot. This is the lake behind my house.

This is what it looked like in late March. Frozen solid. The last time I ran a the dog team across the ice was around April 10.

This is what it looked like yesterday from the seat of my kayak! The governement classifies it as a dead lake as it doesn't support fish. Clearly they've never looked any closer. It's brimming with life. I saw dozens of water fowl yesterday, mostly in what appeared to be mated pairs, and there are four active beaver lodges on the lake now.

Wow!!

I guess the governments decision is fisherman's loss, your gain. (boat free view :D )

Could people still fish on it despite it's title?

I was wondering the same thing as Kimmy.

There must be fish in it for the birds & beavers to survive you would think. If not I wonder if fish were re-introduced to it if they could survive??? Oh well, I think I'd rather have it be listed as a "dead lake" if it means you get it all to yourself! :p

Gorgeous, both winter & summer views! It must be so peaceful, sledding and kayaking along- lucky you!

They could try, but they won't have any luck. Occasionally, I see young boys casting on the shore. It's too shallow for fish. Apparently the gov't tried to stock it a few years ago and the fish didn't survive the winter. At it's deepest it's probably only 8 feet and it freezes pretty much solid in the winter.

It's full of weeds and small bugs and such that support the birds. The beavers are destroying the poplar forest near the lake--which thrills me since I really like beavers and I'm violently allergic to the fuzz poplar trees drop!

I knew I'd like this thread when I read the title. That is fantastic, what a great place to live! I say this often, it's no wonder you're such a great woman!

So, does this Dead Lake have a NAME??

All good lakes need a NAME ...
IF it doesn't have one - YOU and Stuart should create a Name ...
one befitting the Beauty and Splendor of the Lake.

Lake Tamara would certainly do! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif
Or I have a good local friend with your same name - she goes by Tami -
Lake Tami would make TWO nice ladies Happy!

Ah, it already has a name. Mary Lake, although I have no idea how it got that name!

I have a friend who goes by Tami too--same spelling and everything! My Mom would never let me answer anyone who shortened my name. I don't even recognize that any variation of Tammy could be me! You could call me that all day and I won't connect that you are talking to me! My sister's name is Patricia and she's the same way--Pat, Trish, ect don't connect for her as her name at all!

I'd known her as Tami for several years when I *conned* her into being
a Volunteer Fire Department Radio Dispatcher and had to fill out "paperwork".

I filled in "Tami" and she corrected me: "It's Tamara".
I told her she didn't "act" like a Tamara - that Tami "fit better"!

Ah, but do you pronounce it TaMARuh or TAMuhruh? I've known both!

I not only answer to any variations on my name, but all permutations of my sister's name as well - we had the same 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-grade teachers.

Lovely photos. So the pH of the lake is okay, just its depth is un-fish-worthy?

Neither actually! Pronounced Tam-air-uh..Just to further complicate things, my parents let my ticked of 10 year old brother name me and he decided to not give me a middle name! My full first name is TamaraLyn--one word, no hyphen, capital L in the middle!

I think the water is fine--a little grungy and cold for swimming, but it does seem to grow weeds and water bugs well! The birds certainly look well fed and the beavers have successful litters every spring! The lake is a closed system--it's not fed by a river or anything. If there was some moving water it might support fish better.

I forgot about that - makes yours as http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/cool.gif as "Tami"!! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/wink.gif

WHAT do the Beavers do for entertainment?? http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/confused.gif

I was always taught that Beavers HAD to have "running water" in their lakes -
to give them a "Project" to work on ... to *stop* the moving water.

Beavers - Mother Nature's Construction Engineers http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/wink.gif

Years ago I volunteered at a little Sports Car Road Racing Course -
wound for 2 miles through the woods - beside a creek.

One fall Maw & Paw BEAVER moved in and built a Summer Cottage and
a lil pond...
Well, OK ... welcome to da Hood ...

Next year the KIDS needed a place... another pond and several more "Houses"
appeared... Ooooh-Kaaay...

Next year the GRAND-Kids needed places...
THIRD Level of Lakes appeared -
with MORE "Houses"... Hmmmmm ???

Spring Rains arrived... The Waters ROSE! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/eek.gif
The Track was FLOODED for a quarter mile!
THIS was NOT Good! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif

The BEAVER WAR was declared!
Work Parties all Spring - Man vrs BEAVER!
We sacked, burned & pillaged on Saturdays & Sundays.
They *watched* http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/mad.gif

By Tuesday Afternoons the damages we wrought were repaired - water
flow was a mere trickle, and the water was again lapping over the
Race Track. They *smiled* http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif
WE pouted & Fumed! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif

Races were cancelled...
A Friend agreed to bring in a MONSTER Track-Hoe Excavator...
Three days of Mechanized War reduced their Three-Level Lake system to
a mere *trickle* of free-flowing creek.
The Track-Hoe crawled up on it's low-boy and went home...
The Humans & Racers were Happie http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif

A week later the Waters Rose AGAIN...
In two weeks we were FLOODED ... http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/mad.gif
They "smiled" http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif and paddled about "Their" Lakes.

The only thing that seemed to work was if we LEFT the Track-Hoe
*parked* near the dams - the Beaver Army usually only did minor
repairs if the Mechanical Monster remained in sight. Load it up
to send it off to a Paying Job for it's owner - and the 4-Pawed Army
sprang into action and had the Race Track
flooded again within a WEEK!

Final Resolution?
A MONTH's worth of MAJOR Excavating!
We "deepened" the creek by about 8 feet - and piled ALL the dirt
between the Track and the creek - we built our OWN Dam!
(A Quarter Mile's worth!)

The Beaver Army then rebuilt THEIR Dams on the "other side" -
deep enough to "Keep em Happie" but overall low enough to
keep "our" Race Track dry! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/rolleyes.gif

Beavers - Mother Nature's Construction Engineers http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/wink.gif

They are pretty amazing creatures aren't they! Last summer, a beaver dam broke in a small lake near here. Drained it almost over night! The beavers had their dam rebuilt in a day or two and the lake was back in a week!

My Dad has on ongoing battle with beavers on a golf course he helps at. The beavers think the little creek running through it should be a big lake! Dad thinks the 8th green should not be a water hazard!
