I wasn't sure where to post this, since most memorials are for our animals. That's why I've put it here.
I lost a very dear friend. Pat Seremet, writer of the "Java" column in the Hartford Courant (the newspaper I used to work for) passed away suddenly on May 20th from a double aneurysm. She was only 58. :( :( :(
My first day at the Courant, she came up and introduced herself and welcomed me aboard. We got to knew each other very well. She was the "Liz Smith" of the Courant, and knew everyone who was anyone. Her class and style were like no other. Her red hair seemed to make it into a room before she did. A party didn't start until AFTER Pat's arrival.
She PROMISED me if she ever got an interview with Paul Newman, she'd get me his autograph. I'm still waiting and, as she put it, "so am I".
I was dubbed "the crazy cat lady" by Pat, the person that everyone came to for their problems, funnies, advice, whatever they needed to know about cats. Whenever I went into the Features Department, she'd stop what she was doing and ask me about my furkids and ask, "So, how many (cats) today, Dee"?? She said she LIVED for the day when the number would hit the double digits, which of course, it never did. I was always trying to get her to adopt one of my fosters. And the answer was always "Thanks, but no," with a chuckle and a wink.
RIP my friend. I wish I got the chance to tell you what a great impact you had on my life and how much you changed the way I viewed people and wrote about them. Keep that spiral topped notepad and pen handy. I'm sure there'll be plenty of parties going on up there just waiting for you to make your grand entrance.
