WOW! That's GREAT news Roxie!! :D What a wonderful, heart-warming service you will provide! My dad is in a nursing home and I've seen the most touching reactions from very ill patients, when they stroke your soft fur and see your smiling face. I know you'll make everyone very very happy. Just tell mommy to bring some tissues and try not to cry too much (but a proud cry!!);) :)

TO SWEET ROXIE:
How much happiness you will bring to the people you'll visit in the nursing homes!!! You are a wonderful, beautiful pup and your mom must be very proud of you.
And congratulations also to Sandra's STAR. You'll become even more of a shiny star for all the frinds you'll make during your visits.

CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the CGC test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club and are automatically recorded in the AKC's Canine Good Citizen Archive. You do not need to have a purebred dog in order to get this certification.

Evaluators must pass AKC criteria in order to test a owner and their dog. There are 10 steps the handler and dog are tested for. They are:

1: Accepting a friendly stranger

2: Sitting politely for petting

3: Appearance and grooming

4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)

5: Walking through a crowd

6: Sit and down on command - staying in place

7: Coming when called

8: Reaction to another dog

9: Reaction to distraction

10: Supervised separation

My Dusty got his CGC when he was only 6 months old! If your dog has basic manners then sign them up! You will receive a certificate suitable for framing so you tell the world your pup is a CANINE GOOD CITIZEN!

I hve a question...I have thought about getting this certification for Sadie, but can a Halti be used for walking during the test? That is the only way I think she would pass right now...I may take her through one more class first( I am going to anyway...just wondering if I should waiton the test)

No collars of any kind are allowed in the test but a regular non corrective one. So halti's, gentle leaders, pinch and choke collars are not allowed.

Congratulations Roxey!! That's quite an accomplishment and all of your Pet Talk friends are sooooo proud!

At my church we have a small ministry to local nursing homes using several talented doggies like Roxey. The name of the ministry is PAWS. (Stands for Pets Are Working Saints) and they are too! ;) )

It seems like some of you know what to do to get into nursing homes and such. What do I need to do?
