View Full Version : A question about ORANGE kitties.

I keep hearing that orange male tabbies are the greatest. How about orange females? My husband and I have been talking about bringing in another cat but are toying with the idea of getting an orange, or flame pointed, cat because it would "complete our kitty colour spectrum". That would not be any SERIOUS reason we would get our next cat, I just thought it would be nifty. I am going to go look through the "pound" and shelters soon. Also, I was toying with getting an orange kitty because it reminds me of my RB Oliver. He was a great cat. He LOVED taking earrings out of ears at midnight. That's when he loved affection the most, too. ANYWAYS. I wanted to bring in another female but I've read that females, usually of any type/breed, are more territorial which is what I wanted to avoid. Oh man. I won't turn down my next cat if it is not orange that is just what I have my eye open for.

I have a long haired orangie female and she's pretty mean. She's not very friendly with humans or with other cats. Weezie lets my girls know she was the first cat and she's top cat of the home. She loves me and my husband but she's not a people cat.

I suspect this has more to due with her natural nature than being based on color/temperment but I felt it would be best to give you the heads up just in case.

Good luck in finding a new addition to your home! I always joke with my husband too that we need to "collect the whole set" talking about getting one in every color ;)

Ginger females are a lot less common than males. We had one ginger female in a foster litter once- she was actually quite sweet- had three ginger brothers so she was sort of in the shadow of their riotous behavior. We actually almost kept her, but she found a home that was too good to pass up. We even named her Gracie- which was something we usually don't do with fosters- just give them nicknames. Her brothers were just called 'The Yellow Fellows'. :)

Bringing in a kitten would likely be easiest when you already have established females. I am sure there are lots of kittens coming into shelters this time of year- I am sure you will find the cat for you! :D Good luck!

I still think you should just go and look with no preconceived ideas about colour, breed, whatever and just let the cat or kitten pick you. That's how it usually works out. :)

I have never met an orange female, but the orange males who permanently live in the shelter where I help (one has FIV and the other one has a heart disease) are my best friends! I love these two orange guys! :D They are the ones with the strongest personality, they know what they want and they are very talkative.
I know it doesn't help you...sorry! ;)

The orange females I have met are very shy and sweet and nurturing - though my experience is limited. I am not sure it has to do with coloring, although I do have a feeling about blackies, that they are especially affectionate and docile and person-oriented and gentle. So I guess it could have some color link somehow. I understand about being drawn toward a particular color - but I also understand that even if you feel drawn toward a particular color to begin with, a visit to the shelter may introduce you to a kitty of an unexpected color who wins your heart. Happy kitty-finding. I wish I could go looking for more, but we have a harmonious home balance, and we are going to maintain as is.

My female orangie is just the sweetes kitty. She's so easy going & obedient that I call her my "cat-dog". She is a little on the shy side but she has NEVER been aggressive or mean in any way shape or form, not even when strangers catch her & hold her.

My orange boy Sunny is a sweetheart. He's also the goofiest and most entertaining cat too.:) I had an orange female cat when I was growing up and she became moodier as she got older but I still loved her. My Starr is a Flame Point Siamese mix and he's very much a mama's boy but he's also on the feisty side. I hope that everything will work out for you. I still think that orangies are the best.:)

LOL! It almost sounds like orangie female kitties are like red-headed women! Now, now :D

My orangie female, Goldie, was the sweetest, most loving cat ever. When she died I went looking for another orange female and that is when I discovered how rare she was. I'd get another orange female in a heartbeat if I could find one when I wanted to add to my brood.

For now, having one goofy orange male is enough :) He balances out Mitzi's moodiness.

My Scout is a female orange tabby. She's the only one in my group of 5 who doesn't get along well with the others. She doesn't like for the younger cats to bother or touch her and she hates my oldest cat, Ripley, with a passion. She is constantly fighting with Jazz for the Queen Bee spot but Jazz is bigger and a little older and always wins.

On the other hand I have to say Scout it my special kitty. I knew it when I saw her at the shelter. She had been abused by some boys and had really had a hard life. That might explain some of her issues. Anyway, she is a total sweetheart to me, loves to sleep with me everynight and has really bonded with me.

Out of all 5 of my cats she is the only truly social one with people and doesn't hide when we have company. She obviously prefers people to cats - very surprising knowing that people had abused her.

I have an orange and white female by the name of Brianna. Or Brianna banana bread..or my sweet potato pie with marshmellows. She is a major jokester. She loves nothing better than to hide behind something such as a blanket or a door and then leap out and startling the other cats walking by. she loves to be brushed and scratched and petted as long as you don't touch her tail or legs. Those will earn you a hiss and swat. She is a goof but not much of a lap cat or a cuddler. She will sleep with me some nights but that is as much snuggling as she will do.

My orange tabby Male is the sweetest lover that I have ever had. He is in total love with his Mommy can't sleep without me. In fact I would work late in the summer evenings and he would actually wait for me to get home before he would go to bed. Isn't that crazy?? I Love him he is my big Buhdah. We have our evening sleep exercise down to a T. Round and Round on the bed pull all of Moms hair out of her pony tail holder rat the heck out of mommys hair-Drool-roll-over and then sleep with his head on my pillow and one arm around my neck. He is truely the bessssst!
I think you should get an orange Male they are pretty special. :D

Now i have never owned an orangie, so what would I know?? :) but honestly in my experience colour does not come into it very much, they all have different natures and purrsonalities,as by reading this thread you will find some female orangies are wonderful , some not so,however any orangie males i have come across i must say seem to be lovely natured, so maybe there is something in it after all.

Just go along to the shelters with an open mind, and as another poster suggested let the kitty pick you,but if you seriously want an orangie female, then ask at the shelter for the sweetest natured one, good luck. :)

I know an all orange girl and she is great. Very loving with her mama.

I also know there is a reputation with flame point Siamese males as being luv bug, laid back guys.
I've not met/heard about one that it isn't true. Well, maybe one.

But the flame point females, well, I had one so territorial, she mapped out a 6x6 plot of floor, and if any cat entered it, she pummelled them.

Ah, okay. Thank you very much! =D Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had a friendly cat. Well, my grandmothers Maine Coon, Smokey, was super sweet but other than that, no.

My mom brought that to my attention today and it made me think, "Kind of like finding a male calico. It just doesn't happen, usually?" She said yep. Heh, I've seen a lot of animals on here named Gracie and it always makes me think my niece, Grace (Gracie Poo Doody-Head). The Yellow Fellows, hehe. Sounds like a blues band.

Well, Soni is a male and Isis is a female. Soni is very calm, sweet natured, and opposed to other cats. Isis, on the other hand... is, well, Isis. So, bringing in an adult would probably not be the best idea? Do you think it would be a better idea to bring in another male? Thank you very much!

Well, I am not too concerned about colour, just so long as they are nice and comfortable kitties! Soni, our tuxedo male, is the sweetest, most loving, cat that I have ever come in contact with. He is extremely sweet and docile and, thusly, would get beat up easily because he is so friendly. He's smart too! He can open doors, knows (and responds!) to "sit".

Awesome! There seems to be a fifty-fifty thing going on, so far. My whole point with the orange thing was that if orange females are meaner and more territorial then I really don't want to adopt one who won't get along with my Isis (even though she probably wouldn't make contact for a while) because it wouldn't be fair to either of them. But I don't see any reason that would hinder me from adopting an orange female if I that so happened to be the one I wanted. =D Thank you much!

Heh, they sounds very great! See, I would also be worried for the newest kitty' sake because although Isis was third, after Tier passed away and Soni came along, she is still very on-edge and territorial even though she is friendly with my husband, me, and Soni. I wouldn't want the newest kitty to get hurt or something.

Wow, that made me remember. Troy and I adopted a cat that hung around outside (he remained an outside cat as we would not have been able to bring him with us anyways) and named him Shadow. He was pretty awesome. Both of them got along with him and my neighbor/friend two cats(brother and sister).

Don't be fooled by the stray who is loving and purring and doing head bumpies, my Ash the grey one in my siggy was just like that when we took him in, sweet as,but 7 years later we now know it was all an act to intice us into keeping him, lol, we love him to bits all the same but he can be a bit of a mr Jekkyl and Hyde purrsonality , but then that is what makes him so special i guess, he has cattitude.

My black girl Lexie on the other hand makes up for it, could not get a sweeter natured kitty, but then she is a tearaway and recks anything in site, no more net curtains upstairs in my house, scratched and torn wallpaper a favourite pass-time of hers, but she is worth it all. :)

Every cat is different, but i find the females are the ones who don't seem to like each other, i have two backyard kitties i look after and my Lexie changes from a sweet girl to monster kitty when she see's them, she even attacks them through the ranchsliders, mind you one of the girls is just as bad if not worse and ole Ash bless him just takes it in his stride and is not generally bothered by any of them, infact shares his verandah space with them often.

Good luck on your choosing, let us know how you get along.

Soni nudged me to pick him up as soon as I started reading this post. He says, "I am not devious! I promise! *crossed paws*" All in all, he is not TOO destructive. He gets the wicker and regular furniture every couple of days but we're trying to teach him not to while we are in the process of acquiring a non-carpeted scratching post.

That sounds like Soni, he is pretty loving and easy going. He is too friendly for his own good seeing as how someone that my husband and I live with let him outside (knowing that he's not supposed to go out) and he got hurt yesterday. He is limping and I will try and get him to the vet tomorrow. =(

That is so true for me too, Ash just turned up my grey boy and Lexie well i was going to pick a grey cat next to her, but she bit my finger, and we had no idea what colour Lexie was because she was hidden under a blanket, but when those two beautiful yellow eyes looked up at me, i knew she was the one, and my backyard kitties well most of you know how i aquired them, i have yet to actually pick a kitty out LOL :D

That is true for all of our cats as well! :D The newest addition would be the first that may, or may not, "pick" so I am just trying to make sure everything goes smooth. Heh, Tier was given to us by one of my husbands coworkers who felt bad because she did not have enough time to spend with him. Then he passed away and Soni just showed up on our porch three weeks, to the day, later and we kept him. Before Soni showed up we had agreed to adopt one of the kittens that another coworkers pregnant cat was going to have. Heh, Isis is a mama's girl, you can really tell. When we went to pick out a kitty Troy held up my two choices and I couldn't decide so I just pointed to her (I guess the only factor was she was the one who acted interested. I mean, I had nothing else to go on.). I sat down on the lady's couch and Isis promptly went to sleep. She never lets anyone else hold her, pet her, or cuddle her while they are awake but me. She likes to knead, cuddle, and sleep with my husband at night. :D

Out of my guys, my orangies are the most laid back of the group. If I bring in a foster, I know I can count on the boys to be sweet and welcoming to the newcomer.

I never picked any of them.... they all just came here. My orange and white boy, Harry, was adopted and the adoption fell through (he was a foster that never left) and one day I went to take him to an adoption event and hubby told me that Harry was not going anywhere. He could have knocked me over with a feather with that statement! Harry is most definately hubby's boy.

Allen is my first cat, the King of the house. He's a huge 20 pounder and very much a sweetheart.

Pouncer is my silly, naughty boy, who's always getting into trouble and constantly at the vet because of something or other he got into  he's a brown tabby. My girls are also brown tabbies.... and just as bad. I LOVE "nawtee" kitties! :p

But basically, all 5 chose us. We didn't pick them. I wouldn't trade any of them in for the world (though I pretend ot offer Harry back to the rescue just to see hubby's panicked look! :D )

organge girlies are hardtocome by, and the one i nticed at the pet shop was quickly snapped up. i ahve never had an orange cat, but apparently the easist to train,a nd black ones are the hardest.

I've noticed that they are hard to come by but that's not necessarily a deciding factor for me anyways. I was just joking about "completing our kitty colour spectrum". I can imagine that she was! :(

Oliver was always very laid back as well. The big ol' rottweiler didn't bother him a bit. Neither did the rat or hamsters.

Heh, that sounds kind of like what happened with Soni! We got him all cleaned up and I offered to find a home for him and my husband was all, "Nuh uh. That cat isn't going any place."

First kitty ever? :D What was that like for ya?

Our situations keep sounding alike! Somebody that we live with was careless enough to leave the door open (while husband was at work and I was asleep) and Soni got out. Well, I couldn't find him all day and then his dad came home and told me that Soni was outside and so he brought him inside (He had just walked in the door with Soni in his hands). Well, we might have to take Soni to the vet because this is Day Two of treating his foot wound with hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment, and gauze. It doesn't look like it's improving... :( He's VERY nawtee, probably got into a fight with one of the outside cats.

don't even get me started on Isis. She's just the worst of 'em all. ;) :D

I know an orange tabby that hides his head in the crook of my elbow,
Drools all over me, licks me until it hurts and hisses for no good reason.

What else does a male orange do? ;)

Our orange boy Leo is just the sweetest, cuddliest boy. He loves to snuggle up to us all the time, and he lives for belly rubs. He's very funny and boisterous at times, and can be talkative, greeting us at the door most days when we come home from work with a funny sounding meow. :) The other orange cats we've come across at shelters seem very sweet every time. Leo was the sweetest we've ever met, though, coming to meet us while he was up for adoption and hopping on our laps right away.

Good luck, but remember, the cats kind of do "choose" you. :) That's been our experience.

Aw, he sounds like a very darling boy! He reminds me of Soni!

That would be our experience if there were more than one kitty involved in any of the situations! :D Tier was given to us by a coworker of Troy's and she felt bad because not only did she not have the time she felt he needed but he had to stay in her room because of other pets and he was VERY small. Soni just showed up, three weeks to the day after we had to have Tier PTS, on my birthday last year and he has been with us ever since. After Tier passed, but before we got Soni, another lady who worked with Troy told us that one of her females (a Siamese) had gotten pregnant by one of her males (a Ragdoll). We agreed to take in a female kitten. She did have a rather large litter but all but two of the girls were spoken for. When we went to pick her up, Troy held out Isis (was called Fruit Loop by the wench room mate of the lady) and her available sister. The sister just kind of sat there and wasn't very attentive while Isis just stared at me with her eyes. I think that's pretty much what got me. I grabbed her up, sat on the couch, and she promptly fell asleep! Been a mama's girl ever since. Pics:

I have only one picture of Isis and neither a scanner nor a picture disk. I must remember to get a camera soon!
