News spread quickly of reward money offered to help find whoever abused a dog named Lucky.

Friday started with $1,850 in the Justice for Lucky fund. By 4 p.m., it was up to $6,195 with contributors from Birmingham to Orange Beach and even Georgia and Virginia.

The story ran on the Associated Press wire, and The Washington Post ran Lucky's photo on its Web site among top photos of the day.

Two contributions were as high as $500 and $1,000.

Lucky was found Wednesday in a commercial trash bin with his snout duct-taped shut and wrapped in a plastic garbage bag.

He had many wounds to his face and legs, and one leg was so mangled, veterinarian Steven Osborne will have to amputate it.

Osborne and city animal control officials believe Lucky was the victim of illegal dog fighting and was used as defenseless bait for training pit bulls.

"He's eating well and wagging his tail," Osborne's wife, Kim, said Friday afternoon, adding that her husband will perform the amputation this weekend or Monday.

The clinic administered medication to Lucky's right eye Friday to treat an ulcer that developed in it, and Kim Osborne said the eye appeared to improve.

Anyone wanting to add to the reward money can write a check payable to Justice for Lucky and send it to Wachovia Bank, 922 Beltline Road S.W., Decatur AL, 35601 or Osborne Animal Clinic, 914 Beltline Road S.W., Decatur AL, 35601. If police arrest no one, the money will be returned to the donors.

Anyone with tips on the case should call Decatur police officer Greg Sexton at 353-2515.
