Grendel
is an incredible pet. Indigo snakes are one of the smartest snakes
out there, and Grendel is no exception. He definitely recognizes me apart
from other people, and he watches me whenever I am in the room with him. I
take him out a lot to enjoy sunshine and tree climbing, but he's also content
to sit in my lap and relax for hours. Indigo Snakes are the largest snake
that is native to North America. They're very good to have around, as they
like to eat rattlesnakes and other harmful creatures. Unfortunately, their
friendly nature has put them in danger in the wild. Since they're not afraid
of anything, they don't bite people who come across them and pick them up, so
many of them have been killed or taken as pets, and now there aren't a lot of
wild ones left.
I've wanted an Indigo snake for years, but they are expensive, rare, and if
you can't find one in your state you need a permit to get one. (In some states
you have to have a permit no matter what.) I was lucky enough this year to
find someone in my state who was trying to find a home for this little guy,
and I snatched him up! Because he's big and active, he needs a large
enclosure and he uses every inch of it. He is docile and easy to handle, but
if he smells food he gets too excited to think! He has tried to eat paper
towels while in his excited feeding mode! Grendel is a truly special pet and
I look forward to spending many years with him!
