I
got a temp job next to a pet store, which I visited on lunch
break out of sheer boredom. One day, I saw a rabbit cage with a
handmade sign: "Steinway" nine month old Mini-Lop. Curious, I peeked
into the cage. This huge black and white rabbit peered out at
me, his large brown eyes full of wary intelligence. I cracked
up. After all, who would name a rabbit Steinway?
Several days later, I decided to take Steinway out of his cage,
thinking he would be your stereotypical passive cuddler. Wrong!
Wild-eyed, Steinway leapt from his cage, threatening to knock it
to the floor. He then loped around the pet store while I
nervously followed. He was hilarious, like an overgrown puppy
dog! Eventually, the pet store manager suggested that I take him
home. 'If that rabbit doesn't change his attitude, he's going to
end up as python food,' joked one employee. Apparently Steinway
was known as a real 'character' and was not too popular among the
staff.
That afternoon I made the best decision of my life - I took
Steinway home. He's the sweetest companion in the world. I call
him my 'love-bug' because he reminds me of a VW Beetle w/floppy
ears. Sure, he doesn't like to be held but he is always ready to
lay his head on the floor and receive a 'bunny massage.' I never
knew a rabbit could be such a rewarding pet. One look at him and
I start chuckling. I never thought I'd find a bunny soul-mate!
